Call for Papers:  Deadline March 10, 2014

This year, for the first time, the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the Office for Community Engagement and Diversity Initiatives, and the English Department are sponsoring an Invited Student Lecture.  Students are invited to submit essays on the topic below.  Essays will be read by a committee of faculty and administrators from across the university, and the winner will be invited to read his/her essay before a university-wide audience on March 31.  The winner will also receive a small prize and a lunch in his/her honor.

The topic for this year is connected to Women’s History Month, and is inspired by the book chosen for the Freshman Common Experience, The Beautiful Struggle.  In that book, author Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks of his mother as a great influence on him, and describes her as a powerful person of quiet strength.

This call for papers invites student authors to consider a strong, silent woman in their own lives.  Who would you consider to be a “strong, silent woman” in your experience, and how has that individual shaped and influenced you?

A winning essay will have the following qualities:

  • A well-chosen and clear focus on a strong, silent woman
  • Thoughtful reflection on what that woman has meant to the author
  • Compelling stories, details, and descriptions that bring the subject to life
  • An organization that is easy for readers/audience members to follow
  • Polished writing free of spelling, grammatical, and mechanical errors

Essays should also be suitable to be read aloud in a 20 minute presentation to an audience of faculty, students, staff, and administrators.

Please submit entries electronically to Janine Utell, Chair of the English Department, at jmutell@widener.edu.  Interested persons should also feel free to email with any questions.
